Total amount of the project = 308 k€
Amount of grant awarded = 195 k€
Project SURFREEF is the acronym for Solution bio-inspirée mulit-Usages de Résilience Face au Risque d'Erosion côtiere et de degradation Ecologique des petits Fonds côtiers which stands for Bio-inspired multi-purpose solution for resilience against coastal erosion and ecological degradation of small coastal areas
Co-financed by the State and the Occitanie Region within the framework of the Plan Littoral 21, this large-scale project labelled by the Pôle Mer Méditerranée aims to design and create the prototype of an integrated multi-scale and multi-purpose biomimetic solution. This Nature Based Eco-Designed Solution is optimized for the resilience of the beach system as a whole (hydrodynamics - sedimentation - biodiversity) and allows for the delivery of several ecosystem services with high environmental and economic value for the city of Palavas-les-Flots and its population (development of ecotourism activities, development of biodiversity, reinforcement of the ecological connectivity of the shallow coastal areas, maintenance of small-scale fishing, and improvement of the quality of the bathing water in the sea) This project includes a solid multidisciplinary study, allowing to fully apprehend the constraints of a natural coastal site, which can be used in a second time for the in-situ qualification of the complete solution.
This new device is directly bio-inspired from a set of complex architectures originating from the shallow coastal waters with the aim of attenuating swell under conditions of marine weather forcing, while providing an area of suitable habitats for local marine species and being able to serve as a support for various outdoor activities dependent on waves, currents and marine ecosystems to boost coastal ecotourism (discovery diving, paddle, surfing, etc...). This totally permeable and reversible system is a new step in the emergence of soft solutions for coastal protection based on Nature, combining adaptability, modularity, environmental transparency and multifunctional performance.
