Deployment of BrainLine© ecological sinkers in an Atlantic canyon – Brest (29)

900 meters deep, in an Atlantic canyon, off the coast of Brest.

Three ecological sinkers BrainLine© were deployed at a depth of 900 m, within a submarine canyon on the Atlantic margin, close to cold-water corals : remarkable organisms that are still poorly documented. Long affected by bottom trawling, these communities are now at the heart of European priorities for the ecological restoration of marine environments.

This operation was carried out as part of the REDECOR 2025 campaign, led by** Ifremer and Sorbonne University**. LINEUP OCEAN was able to carry out the deployment thanks to the resources of the French Oceanographic Fleet and the support of the GENAVIR teams, on board the Pourquoi pas ?. It forms part of an ambitious mission dedicated to deep-sea ecosystems, which are still rarely restored.

At this depth, the sinkers evolve in a discreet and difficult-to-access environment. Their installation in direct contact with local biodiversity creates a rare opportunity: to observe in situ how eco-designed solutions interact with deep-sea habitats.

Among the deepest ecological sinkers ever installed, the BrainLine© modules represent a valuable study site for upcoming monitoring. The scientific results will help to better characterize the interactions between these structures and the organisms present, and, as part of a national collaboration, support concrete approaches in favor of preserving the biodiversity of the deep sea.
