From Oyster Table to Reef: An Educational Project for Life – SÈTE (34)

In Sète, a simple immersion becomes a true open-air laboratory for biodiversity, in the emblematic Thau Lagoon. Here, experimentation is not just a concept: it is rooted in the field, close to both human activity and ecosystems.

A bio-inspired Oyster Reef module, made from low-carbon shell-based mortar, was installed near the educational oyster table at the Lycée de la Mer Paul Bousquet. The dual ambition is to contribute to the restoration of natural oyster beds and to evaluate the ability of our structures to naturally recruit these key species and stimulate local biodiversity (colonization, refuges, micro-habitats, population dynamics).

Designed as a support for observation and measurement, Oyster Reef also carries a strong human dimension: involving students in a participatory science approach, raising awareness of Nature-based Solutions (NbS), and demonstrating how lagoons and oyster farming installations can become positive action grounds for life. A simple and valuable collaboration, at the intersection of innovation, education, and ecology, serving territories and the restoration of ecosystem services provided by natural oyster beds (food, erosion protection, water quality, etc.).
